Directors

Dr James Fitzpatrick, MD

James combines his management responsibilities with a technical role in which he directs and supports work on safety assessment and strategy and planning studies. He has over thirty years' experience of working mainly in the nuclear industry, in particular decommissioning and waste management, and has also carried out safety assessments for the rail and aviation industries.

Recently he has been involved in developing methods for the assessment of consequences from radiological accidents, in the assessment of safety and risk for numerous nuclear facilities, in the preparation of the associated safety documentation for approval and submission to the regulators, and in the peer review of plans for decommissioning Magnox reactors.

James has also provided expert advice to a number of decommissioning and waste management projects in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union states on behalf of the IAEA.

Ian Wright, Director

Ian is responsible for the Warrington Office with over thirty years’ experience in Risk and Reliability studies carried out in various industries. His technical background is electronics and he has special responsibility in the Company for Control and Instrumentation projects. In this role, he has been involved in the safety assessment of both hardware and software and has contributed to the formulation of national guidelines (HSE PES Guidelines) and international standards (IEC 61508) for electrical/electronic/programmable electronic systems in safety related applications. He has carried out many Safety Integrity Level assessments of safety related systems applying the principles of IEC61508.

He has also been involved with the development of techniques and software tools for fault and event tree analysis, Monte Carlo availability simulation and seismic PRA.

James McGuigan, Director

James is responsible for the technical operations of the Abingdon Office, overseeing the work of approximately forty staff that provide scientific and engineering consultancy to the nuclear industry. He has over thirty years’ experience in the nuclear industry with in-depth knowledge of safety cases, site licensing, radiological protection and emergency planning. One area of specialisation is the regulatory requirements for nuclear licensed sites. He serves as an external member of a number of safety committees including the Nirex Waste Management Advisory Committee

Clients that James has worked for include the Atomic Weapons Establishment, British Nuclear Group, Devonport Royal Dockyard, GE Healthcare, Ministry of Defence, Nirex, and the UK Atomic Energy Authority.

Iain Gray, Director

Iain is responsible for RMC’s Cumbria and Thurso Offices. He has over thirty years’ experience in various roles within the UK nuclear industry. This experience has covered nuclear power station design, support to the fusion research programme within the UK and overseas, and responsibility for all aspects of transport associated with the development of a deep repository for radioactive waste.

He has worked for a range of clients, preparing safety and strategy documents, and is a recognised peer reviewer and workshop facilitator. His particular expertise is in radioactive waste management and the transport of radioactive materials, and he has contributed to the development of international regulations governing such transport. Iain has been the UK Chief Scientific Investigator for an IAEA Co-ordinated Research Programme relating to radioactive material transport.

Don Richardson, Director

Don is the Director responsible for project quality with key clients. He has over thirty years’ experience in the nuclear industry.

Since the mid-1990s Don has worked largely at AWE writing and then leading the production of safety cases, options studies and strategic studies. During his career, Don has also been involved with security risk assessment procedures, safety compliance assessments at nuclear licensed sites and health and safety compliance assessments for the rail network. Don also acts as Safety Officer for UK Nirex Ltd, preparing policies, arrangements and guidance on conventional health and safety.

A Chartered electrical engineer, his early career was spent with the UK Atomic Energy Authority and AEA Technology as a control systems engineer and then a safety engineer supporting large fusion technology research projects.

Julian Hyde, Director

Julian is responsible for all aspects of financial management and control within the company. He previously occupied senior managerial positions with Deloitte and Touche International and Coopers & Lybrand, carrying out financial and operational audits, providing detailed analyses of financial risk and issuing recommendations for reduction of risk.

Julian is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, as well as holding an MBA. His university studies were in engineering. He has a wide variety of international experience, including work across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.
