Management Standards and Integrated Management System (IMS)
Objective:
To develop new company management standards documentation for a major nuclear site licensee as part of the design and implementation of an Integrated Management System (IMS). The documents developed needed to be user-friendly and to provide an unambiguous source of information to staff and stakeholders. The IMS had to provide a management tool that ensured the operator fulfilled the Nuclear Site Licence Conditions under the Nuclear Installations Act (1965) and other Acts, Regulations and Standards
Added value to client:
RM Consultants (RMC) has an in-depth knowledge of the Nuclear Site Licence Conditions, the Radioactive Substances Act 1993 and the nuclear industry regulators and their guidance. RMC is accomplished in producing health, safety and environmental procedures, developing coherent management systems and ensuring compliance with regulations and policy.
Activity:
RMC was able to assist in the production of a new user-friendly unambiguous IMS, that provides sites a comprehensible and clear structure for the key components of the company management. The four main areas of RMC’s involvement included:
- Contribution towards the development of company policy. This was developed from the company strategy and incorporated stakeholder requirements. The agreement of this policy with stakeholders was critical in the production of the remainder of the IMS including guidelines and standards.
- Assisting in the co-ordination and production of environmental and safety standards. These set out the minimum statutory requirements to ensure compliance with company policy, the Nuclear Site Licence Conditions and other legislation regulated by stakeholders including the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate and the Environment Agency.
- Reviewing the current process and procedures to identify gaps or duplication within the current standards system and improve consistency.
- Producing and up-dating supporting documentation for the guidelines and standards.
The IMS enables the operator to become more efficient and to comply effectively with health, safety and environmental guidelines, Licence Conditions, legislation and international standards for operator management.
