Support to the develop a multi-site Integrated Waste Strategy (IWS)

Objective:

To identify waste management issues for a major nuclear operator to facilitate the production of an Integrated Waste Strategy (IWS) in line with the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) specifications and guidelines.

Added Value to Client:

Through Risk Management Consulting (AREVA RMC) past experience of developing waste strategies, data elicitation and optioneering workshops, we were able to provide the appropriate technical and communication expertise. The AREVA RMC team has an intimate understanding of the NDA specifications. Our ability to work with staff at all levels enabled AREVA RMC to lead a series of IWS workshops to develop an effective IWS.

Activity:

AREVA RMC won the opportunity to support a major nuclear operator on their IWS report development which included the following activities:

  1. A review of existing radioactive and non-radioactive waste management strategies, the waste characteristics, waste management requirements and constraints. AREVA RMC also examined IWS reports from other nuclear and non-nuclear sites.
  2. Preparation of and chairing a series of workshops with the client's operational and managerial staff and current contractors to identify issues of concern regarding current waste management activities. Some issues were generic to any waste strategy development; others were specific to the IWS concept development or site specific orphan wastes. The final workshop summary report was used as the basis for the client's IWS report.
  3. Supporting the development of the IWS report which outlines the strategy that will be used to address issues identified in the IWS workshops. AREVA RMC also provided a peer reviewer who examined the scope of the draft IWS, monitored its development and provided valuable advice based on previous IWS-related experience.

In addition, AREVA RMC provided a Peer Reviewer for the IWS process. The Peer Reviewer reviewed the scope of the IWS and monitored its development to ensure that the right direction was taken. Lastly, the Peer Reviewer reviewed and provided valuable comments on the draft IWS based on previous experience of IWS.
