Best Practice in Waste Minimisation Database
Objective:
To create a web-based database containing national and international best practice in waste minimisation in order to partially satisfy the client’s ‘Improvement and Additional Information Requirement’ requested by the Environment Agency.
Added value to client:
The database will assist the client in achieving compliance with its RSA Authorisations.
Activity:
RM Consultants Ltd (RMC) conducted a review of national and international best practice waste minimisation for solid, liquid and gaseous waste. This was undertaken by conducting a desktop literature search. The literature search involved reviewing relevant nuclear operator technical reports, manufacturer technical datasheets, regulatory and advisory bodies’ information, conferences and proceedings, books and the British Standards. A panel of experienced RMC staff provided specialist input. Information on each technology was incorporated into a datasheet, which was reviewed by a panel of independent reviewers.
A web-hosted database was created. This database allows waste minimisation data to be viewed, entered and modified via the Internet. Datasheets were stored in the database using a hierarchical structure.
RMC developed a procedure for carrying out reviews of the information held within the database. This provides the client with the most recent data on each waste minimisation technique. The web-hosted database will be maintained daily.
